This workshop allows students to team with a teaching artist to create a unique poem. Through the power of poetry, students unlock their imaginations and use sparks of creativity to ignite the blank page.

Day 1:  Students discuss imagery used in poetry and examine the poet’s purpose and the power of words.
Day 2:  Students employ brainstorming techniques that can assist them in writing their own poems.  They begin to understand the strength that drafting and editing can bring to a piece. 
Day 3:  Students begin sharing pieces in their own styles.  The teaching artist shares advice and drama concepts that enliven performances and truly bring the power of the blank page to life.

Teaching artist/playwright Nicole Haumesser instructs your students in the fundamentals of playwriting in this highly-interactive workshop, uncovering the four main ingredients in a play. Interactive theater and writing games unlock the students’ creativity while showing them how much fun it can be to write effectively for the stage or the classroom.

You Can Cartoon ~ Ian Beck                    
If you can hold a pencil, you can draw! With cartooning, you can create a world of characters and scenery that is truly limited only by your imagination. Learn how to create characters, give them emotions, movement and attitudes. Find new ways to express yourself, tell stories, develop a new skill, or just improve on an old one... all through your pencil.

                      Day 1: Cartooning basics. Find the shapes all around us and learn how they  
                      apply to all that we do and see. Then manipulate them to what we want
                      them to be. Learn basic pencil control and techniques.
                      Day 2: Continue the basics but add "emotions" and body expression. What
                      happens when you creatively exaggerate them? Students develop a
                      character for future use.
                      Day 3: Take student characters and create the stories to go with them. Learn
                      how to put that character into motion and bring it to life.  Storyboards are  
                      generated.

 

NewKiss Your Worries Goodbye! ~ Emily Harris                       
This whimsical workshop based on Guatemalan Worry Dolls has a purpose: getting students to talk. As participants focus on scraps of fabric, snippets of yarn, assorted beads and pipe cleaners, a relaxed and safe space is discovered where conversations, stories, and new ideas can be shared.  Students discover a creative self while kissing their worries goodbye! (Even teenage boys enjoy this project!)

Spoken Expression ~ Adrienne Nadeau
Spoken Word combines traditional poetry, hip-hop, literary devices and theater to create a dynamic and relevant literary form. Adrienne Nadeau, a nationally touring artist,  brings the energy of Spoken Word to your students in a workshop that is at once educational and entertaining!  Workshops include an introduction to the form and tips on how to write an original poem.  The event concludes with students joining the instructor to "cipher" in a group freestyle.

Students jump inside a story, turn it inside out, and create new worlds bursting with exciting characters, plots, sights, sounds and colors.  Through the use of storytelling, theater, and visual arts games, students map out story elements, organize their thoughts and ideas, and bring original stories to life. Even the most reluctant students are enticed to participate. This program provides excellent ideas for creative writing projects.

Students’ imaginations spring to life with this spontaneous, fun and engaging workshop. Through the language of theater improvisation, teaching artist Nicole Haumesser uncovers the basic building blocks needed for students to find their own voices and share them in front of and with their peers. Have you ever watched a poem?  Can you draw a story in the air?  Can you sing a song with a friend who can’t hear?   Your students will answer “YES” to these questions after their introduction to American Sign Language. Through the art of movement, mime, and facial expressions, students learn how to sign simple songs, stories, poems and their favorite words.

Mime and Movement ~ Ian Beck
We all communicate silently with each other every day. Learn how to enhance that skill through the art of mime and movement. Discover how to "physicalize" a character and story through creative movement without ever saying a word. From simple motions to full force slapstick, explore them all and put your body to good use telling a story that is limited only by your imagination.

It’s as easy as tossing a ball from hand to hand. Learn the basics of juggling, from scarves to bean bags, balls, and just about anything else. A variety of things to juggle are provided. Acquire a new skill or just improve on  an old one while learning the art of patience and improving your hand-eye coordination.

Discover how improvisation can be a valuable tool in unlocking the creative minds of your students while strengthening their higher-level thinking, presentation and self-expression skills.  The teaching artist uses group and individual exercises as well as improvisational games to explore the communication of thoughts, feelings, ideas, characters and stories.

Hero in My World ~ Emily Harris (StellaStitches)
After listening to tales of inspiration, students ask the question, “Who inspires me?” This results in students’ discovery of the individuals in their own lives who are “heroes.”  Participants learn how to express their ideas clearly, develop a better understanding of their own importance, and recognize how even a small gesture can make a big difference. This is an excellent program for CHARACTER COUNTS curriculum.

Day 1: Identify an individual who can be interviewed in person, by phone, or by email.  Learn effective interviewing techniques through theater exercises.  Assignment: Conduct an interview, take notes and photographs, record or videotape it. 
Day 2: Review and discuss interviews and resulting materials.  Practice storytelling and presentation skills through theater games.  Assignment: Learn your story.
Day 3: Show time! Present completed stories. With permission from each student, stories will be videotaped for archival purposes only

Show What They’re Saying! ~ D’Vora Cannell, Silent Partners, Inc.
Add a new dimension to your poetry or writing unit with another language: American Sign Language.  Using source materials written by deaf teenagers, teams of students dissect, discuss and visualize a poem or story. Then, utilizing the movements, gestures and facial expressions of American Sign Language, they create their personal interpretation of the work.

Not just for clowns anymore. This high-energy workshop focuses on clowning and comedy and how they relate to the imagination, focus, concentration and creativity of your students. Participants explore the art of clowning and bringing a character to life through skits, props and stories that enhance their creative freedom, all while discovering a brief history of the art of clowning.

Day 1:  Clowning, its history and why we love it so much.  We explore what      
            makes it so funny with improv games and mime.
            Day 2:  Take what you can do with a character and add some slapstick, expression
            and a character goal.
            Day 3:  Explore your character.  Use simple ideas, jokes or whatever you like to
            create a character skit for all to love.

 

Press Play, Rewind! Improvisation ~ Nicole Haumesser or Ian Beck
In this highly-interactive workshop, students bring ideas, situations and stories from their own experience and learn to use movement, role playing and improvisational skills to REWIND or REPLAY these personal scenes.  The skills they gain in this workshop enrich their drama proficiency, oral communication, and creative writing curriculums.

An audience can be a very scary thing to an actor who loses control of a scene.  In this workshop, students have an opportunity to explore their pre-chosen monologues.  Jared O’Roark will lead them on an informative yet fun journey as they fully develop their characters and discover emotional accessibility in acting.

              Day 1:  We start putting scenes on their feet, focusing on truthful movement     
              and the importance of expressing the emotions of a character not just
              through spoken words, but in every movement of the actor’s body.
              Day 2:  Through dramatic exercises and guided practice, the scene work continues and
             participants learn to evaluate the choices and level of risk.
              Day 3:  Participants present their work to the class or audience.

Students transform familiar stories into short works of performance art  through the rich and expressive American Sign Language. They also discover the process an interpreter uses to bridge the gap between English and American Sign Language.  Learning to communicate through signing, participants develop an understanding of the deaf culture. A videotape is left with the teacher for future use.
NOTE: Multi-day residency includes a final presentation.

This workshop literally keeps your students on their toes by combining Latin rhythms with high-energy movements to encourage kids to exercise. She merges dance moves with a quick workout routine that is fun and easy to learn.  Liz shows  your elementary and middle school students how to “find their own groove” by mixing merengue with salsa, adding a blend of bachata, a sprinkle of cumbia and a dash of hip-hop to bring you a spicy Zumba fitness sensation that is sweeping the nation!

Classical masterpieces can be easily recognized and enjoyed by adding lyrics and complementary movement activities. Dancing, singing, playing instruments, and other enjoyable activities provide ideal pre-instrument training. Children’s songs are explored in English, Spanish, German and Chinese. Each session features live accompaniment by the instructor.

NewHammered dulcimer musician Sarah Fady performs a variety of tunes to demonstrate the diverse sounds of this multicultural folk instrument.  Students discover and identify feelings expressed by the vibrant music of the hammered dulcimer.  Listening skills are fostered, and students learn about the history of this ancient stringed instrument.  Note:  The workshop facilitator will custom tailor the presentation to specific audiences or curriculums.

Fun on the Drum ~ Steve Turner
Using drumming as a vehicle for creative synergy, participants discover how to transfer a sense of play to their work and environment.

This workshop will have your feet tapping to the rhythms of Cuba, Venezuela and Puerto Rico.  Get your dancing shoes ready…

NewLiterature, Come Alive ! ~ Adrienne Nadeau
Learn new techniques that encourage teens to explore literature through spoken word poetry, the craft of performance poetry, which combines classic literary devices with current teenage appeal.
Available: Monday-Friday, year-round

Length: 60-90 minutes

Zumba Gold ~ Liz Quiñones
I can’t dance, but I can Zumba!” Why are these people smiling while exercising? Because Zumba Gold takes all the excitement from the original Zumba class and introduces it to beginners, older active adults, and seniors.  This workshop is a well-rounded fitness program utilizing the five components for success: warm-up, flexibility, cardio, resistance, and cool-down.  Let Liz help your group feel stronger, younger, happier and healthier while dancing to merengue, salsa, mambo, bachata, cha cha, cumbia, flamenco, tango, and rock ‘n’ roll.  Who says exercise can’t be fun?

Zumba Chair Program ~ Liz Quiñones
“Get Fit While You Sit” This Zumba Chair workshop is designed to provide an appropriate workout for those who have limited mobility,  a medical disability, surgery/injury, or a physical disability, because no one should be excluded. This workshop covers a variety of dance rhythms such as merengue, mambo, bachata, and cumbia, with the occasional Rock ‘n’ Roll moves thrown in. The program is very effective for healthy aging.  Please be seated and work your way to a healthier and fitter YOU!
Available:  Monday-Friday, year-round
Zones: 1, 2 (always available); 3, 4 (full day ONLY)
Recommended for individuals with physical limitations
Length:  60 minutes
Capacity:  30 participants per workshop
Fee: $150.00 for 1 workshop/$50.00 each additional workshop on the same day

PAYMENT

1. Prices are based on same day, same location bookings.
2. Schools in zones 2, 3 and 4 will be charged additional transportation fees.
3. An invoice will be sent to you after your booking date has been determined.
4. Payment or PO* must be received prior to presentation/workshop.
*PAYMENT is to be submitted to the artist the day of the workshop or performance.
5. The teacher requesting the booking will be the contact person and will be responsible for assuring
that payment is made.
6. The artist will call the contact person one to two weeks prior to the event date. If the artist does not call, please contact the Artists on the Road Coordinator at (727) 712-2714.
7. We require that all host organizations maintain a minimum of one adult per 30 children in the workshop or performance area.
