Master Classes


Master classes at The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute are offered in a variety of disciplines. Classes are usually in connection with an artist or company being presented on the Ruth Eckerd Hall stage and/or enhance the studies in an art discipline. Master classes for 2005 include study with the Juilliard String Quartet, Midori and the Trinity Irish Dance Company.

Master Works
Classes, workshops, lectures, panel discussions, and/or symposiums are open in a variety of disciplines. These opportunities are usually in connection with an artist or company being presented at Ruth Eckerd Hall or in residency at the Institute. Intersession Workshops

Designed to enhance the educational preparation for those students enrolled in the preparatory division.  Space is limited and advanced enrollment is required. The fee is $50.00 + supply cost (when applicable). Workshops range in topic from Audition Techniques to Technical Theater. 

Understanding Sound & Performing with a Solo Microphone
Date and Time: Sunday, January 20, 1:30–4:30 pm
Instructors: Jeff Hartzog, Kevin Kennedy, Tyson Smith and guest singer
Be introduced to sound by leading audio engineers housed right here at Ruth Eckerd Hall’s
Main Stage! Learn about the different types of microphones, use of monitors, speakers, movable
systems, etc. Come prepared with a Karaoke accompaniment to your favorite solo song
and learn the how to’s of singing with sound from the pros.

Creating Lead-In Monologues for Solo Repertoire
Performance: Evening at the Murray, Friday, January 11, 7:30
Workshop: Saturday, January 12, time 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Instructor: Maria Zouves
Be a part of this two-day experience. Watch world-renowned singer Maria Zouves perform an Evening at the Murray solo repertoire with lead-in monologues. Observe how she masterfully creates characters and sets the scenes for the songs that follow. Spend four hours with her on Saturday working on your own monologues and solo repertoire. Come prepared with a classical or musical theater piece with an original monologue or one adapted from the show.

Mainstage Connections

Join us before the show for a "behind-the-scenes" lecture by artists, directors and technicians. Discover more about the performance or art form before the curtain goes up! Pre-show lectures times and dates vary per season. Tickets are available for an additional $3.50 when purchased with a ticket to the performance. Lecture Only $10 per person.

Opera Lecture Series
The Pinellas Opera League, in partnership with The Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute, presents a lecture series each season focusing on various opera topics. Individual tickets are $5.00 per person or purchase a season package of all six lectures for $25.00. Open to ages 19 and up.
